Running bleeding-edge software is a deliberate trade-off: you accept instability in exchange for early access to features that will define the next generation. But there is one thing that should never be unstable on a pre-release build — the tooling that tells you which version you are running and whether you are up to date. In OMNI v0.5.4-rc2, we completely overhauled our version comparison semantics to give release candidate users the diagnostic precision they deserve.
The Pre-Release Paradox
Before this fix, omni doctor and omni update had a fundamental blind spot. The version comparison logic used a naive string-based semver check that did not understand pre-release suffixes. This created a maddening paradox: if you were running v0.5.4-rc1 and the latest stable release was v0.5.3, the tool would sometimes report that you were behind — suggesting a downgrade to the older stable version. Release candidate users were being punished for being early adopters.
Three States of Version Truth
The fix introduces a proper three-state version awareness system. When you run omni doctor, it now explicitly distinguishes between [LATEST] — you are running the current stable release, [UPDATE] — a newer stable version is available and you should upgrade, and [AHEAD/RC] — you are running a pre-release or development branch that is ahead of the latest stable. Each state is rendered with distinct visual styling in the terminal, making your version status instantly scannable without reading a single word of the diagnostic text.
Correcting the Semantic Comparison Engine
At the implementation level, the is_newer function was completely rewritten to properly parse and compare pre-release suffixes. The logic now correctly recognizes that 0.5.4-rc1 is semantically newer than 0.5.3, and that 0.5.4-rc2 is newer than 0.5.4-rc1. The comparison handles arbitrary pre-release tag depths, so even experimental builds like 0.6.0-alpha.3.nightly will sort correctly in the version hierarchy.
Release Script Hardening
Complementing the runtime improvements, the bump_version.sh release script was updated to natively support Semantic Versioning with pre-release tags. Previously, bumping a version with a -rc1 suffix required manual editing of the version string. Now the script accepts pre-release identifiers as first-class parameters, streamlining the release candidate workflow for our internal development cycle.

This release might seem minor on the surface — two bug fixes and some diagnostic polish. But for the developers who choose to run release candidates, version precision is the difference between confidence and anxiety.
